The Mayor is elected using a “supplementary vote” system.
The supplementary vote system ensures that if a candidate receives over 50% of the first preference votes then he or she will be immediately elected.
If a candidate short of 50% of first preference votes then the two candidates with the most first preference votes go forwards to a second round.
The other candidates are eliminated at this stage, though the second preference votes on their ballot papers are counted. If these votes are for either of the top two candidates then they are added to their totals.
The candidate with the most first and second preference votes will be announced to have won the election.
